SteelEye Announces Updates to LifeKeeper for Windows Version 6 and SteelEye DataKeeper for Windows Version 7

Today we announced the immediate general availability (GA) of updates to several of our Windows solutions.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Windows Version 6 Update 2 Maintenance 1 

·         This update enhances usability and simplifies configuration when protecting applications including Oracle, SQL Server, Exchange 2003 and 2007. 

SteelEye DataKeeper for Windows Version 7 Maintenance 2     

SteelEye DataKeeper was updated to optimize memory usage and performance.

SteelEye Announces PowerPath Recover Kit v6.4 and support for RHEL 5.3

Today we announced the immediate general availability (GA) of the PowerPath Recovery Kit (6.4.0).  We are also announcing that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 3 is now supported with LifeKeeper for Linux 6.4.2. 

 

Power Path Recovery Kit 6.4.0

•         Now supports the new Power Path version 5.3 from EMC

      This new version of PowerPath handles path repairs in a completely different way from older versions of PowerPath.  EMC wants all of their Linux customers to move to this new version of PowerPath.

 

•      This version of the PowerPath recovery kit is NOT backward compatible with older versions of PowerPath.

     This version will not install if the customer has an older version of PowerPath installed on their system.  EMC is strongly encouraging their customers to move to Power Path 5.3.  We will be shipping the version 6.4.0  kit to all customers ordering PowerPath.  In the event that a customer cannot (or will not) move to PowerPath 5.3, SteelEye support will supply that customer with the older version of our kit (6.2.3) that will support older versions of Power Path.

•         Improved Customer Experience

The combination of the new EMC PowerPath 5.3 and the new PowerPath Recovery Kit 6.4.0 should provide much improved overall reliability.

 

Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 3

•         Certification testing is completed on this new Red Hat update and is now supported with LifeKeeper 6.4.2

When to Lose the Cloud

The cloud can be a boon to an organization or it can be an Achilles heel. Market analysis shows that a primary inhibitor to the deployment of cloud services is concerns about privacy and data ownership. Each company has to understand what is at stake when taking their internal applications and their business data outside the firewall. A company needs to look at the long-term viability of the cloud vendor, their infrastructure, the location of the data and any potential issues with storing their data in locations that may have federal, state or local government restrictions for use and transfer of the information.

Two primary examples of industries that may "lose the cloud" are healthcare and government. There are civil and criminal penalties associated with the information that these organizations host and any leakage can put these organizations and their employees at significant risk. Until the risks are mitigated and the controls are in place, these industries may find the risk is not worth the reward of utilizing cloud-based services. In general, publicly-held companies need to assess the regulatory statutes they work under to determine the viability of cloud deployments.
